No slant please

YOU’D never guess which way the Conservative Cabinet of Wyre Forest District Council want you to vote in the “Mayor or Strong Leader” referendum, would you?

I don’t hold with the ‘Kingmaker’ principle which gives such power to the likes of Red Ken or Bonkers Boris and I would really like a change to a “strong council leader” in Wyre Forest.

Most of all, however, I do not want to see deliberate bias in the way the electoral campaign is run. The phrase “Mayor or Strong Leader” is slanted.

If they’d wanted it the other way, would they have put “Elected Mayor or Unelected Council Leader”? Either way, it's wrong and anti-democratic and the council has a duty to be impartial.

Get your facts right!
The phrases "Elected Mayor" and "Strong Leader" come from the legislation NOT from the Council

Um sorry Fran but the models set come from Part 2 of the the Local Government Act 2000 and while featuring the term "elected mayor" it doesn't use "strong leader".

Now apparently the Government refers/referred to the "Strong Leader" model and indeed "strong leadership" appears in the White Paper "Strong and Prosperous Communities", but as far as I can see the term itself appears in no legislation.

So to an extent you're both right, just not quite for the reasons given.
