YOUNG readers at Stourport Library are reaping the rewards of having kept up their reading habits over the long school summer holidays.

Children who successfully completed this year’s summer reading challenge at the Worcester Street-based library, reading six books over the summer, were invited to a special ceremony which took place at the venue on Saturday, October 6.

Many of the reading challenge finishers attended the ceremony and were cheered on by family members as they received their medals from Stourport Mayor Gary Talbot.

The young readers also received an additional reward with the opportunity to meet Jack Brothwell - Stourport Swimming Club treasurer who was chosen to carry the Olympic Torch as it passed through Redditch earlier this year.

He brought along his torch for the children to see and be photographed with.

Stourport library manager, Maureen Hobbs, said: “Every year we are excited to be running the summer reading challenge.

“It is a fantastic scheme that gives children real motivation to continue their reading across the summer holiday and keep their vital literacy skills up to date ready for a return to class in September.

“This year all the sporting and Jubilee events have provided a real focus on achievements and we hope that having the chance to meet an Olympic torch bearer and the Mayor on the same day has ensured our young readers feel justly proud of their success.”
