Wyre Forest MP welcomes financial education at schools

WYRE Forest’s MP has welcomed a Government plan to introduce financial education to the school curriculum, something he previously campaigned for.

The new curriculum will see elements of personal finance included in both mathematics and citizenship education.

Education secretary Michael Gove announced last Friday a public consultation on the draft curriculum will run until mid-April and changes are to be introduced into classrooms in September 2014.

Conservative Mark Garnier said: “I am delighted to see the Government announce the introduction of financial education in school curriculum, as I have been campaigning for greater financial awareness among young people for a long time.

“I hope the new curriculum will help tackle two of our major problems - financial illiteracy and the plague of misselling of financial products.

“I am very glad to see that the campaigning efforts of APPG Financial Education for Young People and of Personal Finance Education Group have paid off.

“I am certain that this introduction of financial literacy will be a major engine for social mobility in the 21st century.”
