A SELFLESS young woman will be jetting off to Bangladesh to help farmers create a more sustainable lifestyle and learn their agricultural rights.

Jessica Davies, of Kidderminster, is giving up her spare time to spend three months in the south Asian country in a bid to make a difference to the rural community.

While there, the 21-year-old will be empowering families to get the most out of the produce they sell to try and prevent poverty.

Miss Davies will be among a group of 18 British volunteers heading out to the country with volunteering charity VSO to work on the agriculture and food securityprogramme.

She said: “This is something I really wanted to do. I’m very excited.

“ I think it will be very worthwhile and an amazing opportunity to go to a different place. It’ll be the first time I’ve ever been awayfor so long.”

The former Bewdley High School and Sixth Form Centre pupil will be flying out to north west Bangladesh on September 20 and needs to raise £800 before the trip so VSO can run similar projects in 11 other countries aroundthe world.

She has already raised £100 and is hoping to collect the rest of the cash during a sponsored 10k run on Sunday.

She is also taking part in a ‘live below the line’ challenge, in which she will have to survive on £1 a day for food and drink, next Monday.

Miss Davies, who has recently graduated in political science from the University of York, is hoping the trip will help her carve out a career in development and sustainability in the charity sector when she returns.

“I want to experience living in a new community that’s totally different to what I have ever experienced,” she said.

“I will try and make a difference in helping them farm in a sustainable way and people can avoid poverty in rural communities.

“It will be a real sense of achievement on my part if I can create some form of positive impact.”

She added she would be staying with a Bangladeshi family during her stay so would feel less isolated while out there.
