FUN at the fair led to a lifetime of love for a Wolverley couple who have celebrated 60 years of wedded bliss.
Love blossomed for Aubrey Tipping, 79, and Beryl, 80, after their eyes met among the dodgems at the annual fair in Kidderminster. The couple soon fell in love and tied the knot at St Mary’s Church five years later.
“Once a year a funfair used to come into town and we met there,” said Mrs Tipping. “There were just gangs of us.
“There were four or five of us and we always went out together and me and Aubrey just seemed to pair off.”
She added: “Normally in those days the man had to ask the girl’s dad for their hand in marriage but Aubrey had to do his national service when he was 21 and my dad said ‘if you two are going to get married you ought to get married before he goes in the Army because you need your pension’, which was seven and sixpence a week.”
The couple went on to have two children and one grandchild and will be toasting their diamond wedding at the New Meeting House,Kidderminster.
“It’s been a happy marriage,” said Mrs Tipping, a former carpet setter. “I wouldn’t change anything. We’ve done everything together – you name it and we’ve done it.
“I think the main thing is thanking one another. If he cooks a meal I say thank you and if I do anything he always says thank you.”
The musical couple can often be found playing the street organ at events across Worcestershire and performed at the Kidderminster Horticultural Society show at the Mercure Hotel.
