End of the road for campervan
6:30am Sunday 13th October 2013 in Local
A KIDDERMINSTER woman who used a camper van as her wedding vehicle has expressed her sadness that production of the Volkswagen vehicle is coming to an end.
Laura Gillam travelled from her home to St Peter’s Church, Cookley in the iconic Camper Van when she wed her husband Luke, on August 30. She was also escorted from the church in the vehicle to her reception at Kidderminster Harriers’ Aggborough stadium.
Production of the VW Camper Van in Brazil is set to come to an end at the turn of the year. It is the last place in the world still producing the vehicle, much-loved by hippies through the flower-power 1960s and by subsequent generations of travellers, surfers and festivalgoers.
Mrs Gillam said: “It’s really sad they are going to stop making them because it’s a really popular vehicle.
“We chose it for our wedding because my husband is a mechanic and he loves Volkswagen cars and it was something different. It’s like the end of an era.”
Production is being stopped in Brazil because the vans cannot be fitted with air bags which are required by safety laws.
