Fred's honour as Kidderminster 'local hero'
A KIDDERMINSTER stalwart has finished runner-up in a television search for the Midlands’ “local hero of the year 2013”.
As part of ITV’s Pride of Britain Awards, Fred Holland, chairman of Diabetes UK’s Wyre Forest branch, was one of four finalists for the local hero honour and just missed out on the chance to appear at the national awards ceremony later this year.
Mr Holland, 77, has raised more than £140,000 since becoming chairman of Diabetes UK’s Wyre Forest voluntary group in 1961.
He said: “It was a big honour to be nominated and put forward, when I got the call to say I would be on TV I thought it was brilliant.
“I would have loved to have won it but it was really nice for someone from Kidderminster to be involved. Everything I have done is for the people of Kidderminster and I am proud of what I have done and proud of the staff [at the Kidderminster Hospital-based Fred Holland Centre for Diabetes].
“I would have shared the honour with my wife Shirley who I am looking after, at the end of the day she is the wind beneath my wings.”
A film about each of the four finalists was show on ITV Central’s 6pm news broadcasts between Monday and Thursday September 23 - September 26 with the winner being read out on the show last Friday, September 27.
