Town toilet rumours of closure flushed out

RUMOURS that Bewdley’s public toilets could close have been flushed out after it was confirmed the facilities would remain open.

Wyre Forest District Council leader John Campion said the lavatories in Load Street car park would not be closed despite fears raised by families.

Angry residents had contacted The Shuttle following rumours around the town that the toilets, used by tourists throughout the summer months, were under threat of clo - sure but Mr Campion has now dispelled the claims.

“We are not proposing to close the public toilets in Load Street car park,” the Conservative councillor said.

Bewdley town councillor Derek Killingworth echoed Mr Campion, adding the main toilets “are not going anywhere”.

The Independent Community and Health Concern member said the town council had been assured by Mr Campion that the toilets would not close but the cubicle in Dog Lane car park would be shut.

Talks between the Town Council's Project Officer and officers of WFDC have been going on for some time under the heading of Localism, which means transferring services from the District Council to the Town Council. One of these services included the running of the public toilets in Load Street car park. The three options for the toilets were. Take over responsibility for providing public toilets. Set up a community toilet scheme whereby local hotels, pubs and cafes would be asked for the public to use their facilities. To close the public toilet. The 'pay as you go' toilet in the centre of Dog Lane car park will go anyway because it is too expensive to run.
The Town Council agreed at its November meeting to authorise the Project Officer to continue discussions with the District Council with regards to community toilets but not to dismiss the possibility of running the toilets themselves. These were not rumours! Copies of agendas and minutes are available on the Town Councils web site. Councillors have just been informed that the ladies toilet in Load Street car park is closed because of a sewer problem and will not open until the new year. The Duck Race is on the 1st January ( if it goes ahead because of the flooding ) where thousands of people visit the town. This could be the chance to try out the community toilet scheme!

Funny how quickly Cllr Campion can backtrack when he is at risk of losing public support and votes! Thank you Cllr Gittins for providing an honest and accurate account of what has actually happened!

It's always nice when the Bewdley labour party come out in support of one of their own.

I gave the assurance to Bewdley town council over a month ago .... So hardly the back tracking I'm accused of. Bewdley as a tourist town will always need public toilets, it is right to consider if a community scheme is workable in the town.

Labour in Bewdley, and the wider Wyre Forest need to stop being part of the problem and start being part of the solution.

Dear Cllr. Campion,

The toilets ARE closed. It may only be temporary while WFDC undertakes repairs to the sewer pipework, but it doesn't alter the fact that they're closed at a time of year when there are still plenty of tourists in Bewdley. And the Duck Race is just round the corner with, roughly, a thousand parents and kids all descending on Bewdley's toilets that will still be closed.

Bewdley's a lovely town apart from the constant smell of urine. We remember when there were functioning toilets open at the bottom of Park Lane as well.

Portaloos in Load Street car park?

Cllr Campion, you were doing so well in this debate and then you resort to Gittins-esque tactics. Shame really...

Jackie Pressley does raise a vital point, though. Portaloos would be a good thing for Duck Race Day. Many hundreds of people in town for that event.
