WYRE Forest Karate club members have been sparring in aid of a Worcestershire charity supporting deaf and hard of hearing children.

Young Gloves Karate presented £5,550 to the Worcester Deaf Children's Society following a record-breaking year of fundraising.

Ian Shakespeare and his son Joseph Shakespeare, who is a member of Young Gloves with hearing difficulties, accepted the money on behalf of the charity.

Sensei Justin Thomas, The Shuttle's Sports Personality of the Year, said: "I would like to thank all of local businesses who have sponsored trophies, donated raffle prizes and provided equipment and helped at the events."

Last year, members of Young Gloves Karate attempted a world record and raised the most they have in 11 years at their annual fundraising competition.

A charity is now being chosen for this year's fundraising and members hope to hold a summer barbecue, their annual competition and do the Three Peaks Challenge in aid of it.
