THE long-awaited construction of a controversial new superstore in Stourport, already two years behind schedule, could start within weeks.

Tesco plans to build the supermarket on a 45,000 sq ft site off Severn Road.

At the public meeting held on Monday to discuss Tesco's plans for Areley Kings, the firm's corporate affairs manager Simon Petar said work was now due to get under way at Stourport.

He said: "Work on the Stourport site will begin at the end of this month or beginning of next" but did not provide more specific details when questioned by The Shuttle.

Plans were approved by Wyre Forest District Council’s planning committee in 2010. Originally set for a 2012 opening, it was then delayed until 2013. When that did not materialise either Tesco then said it was due to open this year.

The constant delays had sparked rumours Tesco had lost interest in the project although that has never been confirmed and the company has already invested a large amount of money in access roads and a bridge nearby as part of the scheme.
