TOYS have been delivered to a foodbank in Kidderminster to help brighten up the lives of children in families going through a time of crisis.

The 230 toys, along with food packages, were donated to Kidderminster Foodbank by delivery company FedEx and will be distributed to families unable to put food on their tables.

It came as foodbank organisers revealed the service, based at the town centre Baxter Church, has now fed 5,450 since May, 2012. It fed more than 2,000 people during its first year of operation and has already provided more than 3,000 people with food during its second year. The foodbank has so far received 70 tonnes of food and given out 60.

The charity has also started offering baked beans on toast or soup and bread on Wednesday and Friday mornings to those homeless people who have already reached their voucher limit of four every six months. Each voucher entitles the holder to three days worth of emergency food.

Trevor Hoyle, vice-resident of operations for FedEx UK, said: "We are really proud to be working alongside the Trussell Trust [which runs the foodbank]. It is such a worthwhile cause and we are glad our involvement can help children and families in times of difficulty."

Kidderminster Foodbank co-ordinator Maureen Lewis said: "We are still receiving a wonderful supply of food from churches, private donors and many donations come via the collection boxes at Sainsburys, Tesco and The Shuttle."

She said toys delivered by FedEx and some from the Trussell Trust would be given out at Easter to children.

Mrs Lewis added extra media attention for foodbanks, including being one of the causes supported by the BBC's Sport Relief, had contributed to a rise in donations and the Kidderminster branch was now a community champion for Wyre Forest Citizens' Advice Bureau (CAB) and was therefore able to offer users more help and advice.

The Shuttle’s Blackwell Street office is a collection point for the foodbank, which opens at Baxter Church in Kidderminster town centre on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12.30pm until 3.30pm and Fridays between 9.30am and 3.30pm.
