A KIDDERMINSTER business owner has raised £1,000 for a cancer charity by shaving his head.

Alan Turner, 48, managing director of Pockets Snooker Club, at the rear of Church Street, got the grade one cut in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and his members proved eager to donate in return for the chance to wield the clippers.

The serial fundraiser, who has completed two sky dives and organised a 24-hour snooker marathon on his way to raising around £5,000 for charity over the past four years, was persuaded to get it all chopped off by one of his regulars.

Toni Palmer-Young, who shaved her head when her mother feel ill with cancer two years ago, dared the club manager to follow in her footsteps and Mr Turner rose to the challenge.

He said: “It was a great chance to raise money for a good cause.

“A few people in my own family have been touched by cancer so it seemed to fit for me to get involved.

“Naturally I was a little apprehensive but I felt happy to do it because it would result in helping other people.

“I am delighted with the total as I never expected to raise £1,000.

“I always think you have got to give something back and it is nice that the club members continue to support these fundraisers.”

The head shaving event took place at the club on Sunday, August 3 and a barbecue and raffle were held to help boost the total.

Club member Matthew Williams, 25, also went under the clippers after an off-the-cuff decision to join the club manager in the challenge.
