A BOWLING club has been handed a boost after being handed more than £9,000 to improve facilities for users.

Stourport Bowling Green Club secured a £9,400 grant from Biffa Award, which will be used for renovating the toilet facilities.

Biffa Award is a multi-million pound fund that provides grants to community and environmental projects across the UK, as part of the Landfill Communities Fund.

The club, which was established in 1870, provides facilities for more than 120 current bowling members as well as the local community through a variety of activities, including line dancing and skittles as well as a venue for community celebrations and events. This ongoing use by the community has led to the general wear and tear of the toilet facilities, resulting in the need for urgent renovation.

The project, which was awarded funding under Biffa Award’s Recreation theme, will refurbish the male and female toilets, which were installed more than 60 years ago. Project works will include the installation of new conveniences along with cubicles and vanity units. Once these major works have been completed, the toilets will have new decoration and flooring throughout.

Denis Smith, Trustee, Stourport Bowling Green Club, said: "The club is once again pleased to have the support of Biffa Award – this time to completely renovate the Club House toilet facilities. “The improvements will benefit all members and visitors to the club which provides sport; recreation and friendship to the local community.”

Mel Jones, Leader of the Line Dancing Group, said: "I am very pleased that Biffa Award has awarded Stourport Bowling Green Club a grant which will enable it to refurbish the toilet facilities – a much needed improvement which will serve the club for many years to come.”

Gillian French, Biffa Award Programme Manager, said: “This project is an excellent example of how the Landfill Communities Fund can help develop local spaces for the community. “We are pleased to be able to support the project at Stourport Bowling Green Club, as it improves the facilities for the whole community.”
