KIDDERMINSTER singer Clark Carmody will be battling out on The Voice this weekend.

The 27-year-old who grew up on the Spennells Estate, has already wowed coaches in the initial blind audition stages of the BBC show and was snapped up by coach Rita Ora, who described his voice as ‘ridiculous’.

He’s now back for the next stages of the competition, the battle rounds, which will see him, sing against fellow contestant Olivia Lawson, in a hope to sail through to the third stages of the competition.

Clark said: “The blind auditions were just brilliant. We were told what Rita had chosen for us to sing beforehand. I was quite stumped by it, because it was a ballad.

“But it seemed like Rita knew what she was doing and wanted us to both turn it into our own song. She wanted us to be the best we could be rather than imitate someone else. Rita chose Britney’s song ‘Everytime’.

“I really did not want to go up against anyone in our team. Obviously you want to get through, but you make friends in the competition, which makes it even more difficult. It’s really hard.

“Olivia is just brilliant, her tone is just beautiful. I was thinking ‘oh great’ when I was matched up against her. I just thought her tone would show through in our chosen song.”

Following their battle, pop star Rita will decide which of the two will be sent through to the third stage, the knockout, and who will be sent home.

If Rita doesn’t choose Clark to go through, he could still be given a lifeline by one of the other coaches – Tom Jones, Ricky Wilson and will.i.am – who could steal him for their team.

Kidderminster is backing Clark who first appeared on the show last month, with his rendition of Sam Smith’s hit ‘I’m Not the Only One’.

He said: “I never imagined I would get passed the blind auditions, never mind through to the battles. I never wanted to imagine it, because as soon as I start thinking about it, it could all just fall apart.

“It’s just a great experience and I’m taking each day as it comes. But maybe that’s just me being supercritical.

“It’s just a brilliant experience. I am chuffed to bits.”

Clark currently lives in Stratford-upon-Avon with his girlfriend and nine-month-old daughter Primrose, and works as a hair stylist in the town.

Tune in to see how Clark gets on in The Voice on BBC1 on Saturday at 7.15pm.
