NHS Wyre Forest Clinical Commissioning Group is supporting Allergy Awareness Week, to raise awareness of allergies and how they impact people’s lives.

The week, organised by Allergy UK, takes place from Monday, April 20, to Sunday, April 26, which will this year highlight the lack of awareness around severe allergies.

One-in-four people in the UK suffer from an allergy at some time in their lives. The numbers are increasing every year and as many as half of those affected are children. Some of the most common allergens include pollen, house dust mites, mould and pets. Less common allergens include nuts, fruit and latex.

Dr Simon Rumley, chair and clinical lead for NHS Wyre Forest CCG, said: “Allergies are very common and on the rise. Wherever possible, the most effective way of managing them is to avoid all contact with the allergen.

“Medication can’t cure your allergy, but it can be used to treat the common symptoms of an allergy, such as a runny nose, itchy mouth and sneezing. Remember to always seek advice before taking any new medication.

“It’s important to remember that most allergies are minor. In some cases though, people can have a severe reaction, known as anaphylaxis, which can impact hugely on their daily lives and this is the kind of information that Allergy UK is trying to promote during Allergy Awareness Week.”

If you think that you have an allergy or you need some support managing an allergy, visit your local pharmacist who will be able to help with medication or advise you the best way of avoiding the allergen.
