A WARNING has been issued to dog owners in Worcestershire after suspicious behaviour was reported to police.

Yesterday (Friday 17), a concerned owner from Sedgeberrow, near Evesham, called West Mercia Police after seeing people in a van acting "furtively" around her Alaskan Malamute, which was in the front garden.

Police have urged owners to be vigilant, as it is not unheard of for dogs to be stolen - particularly rare or expensive breeds - for financial gain such as breeding, resale or ransom.

Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity should call West Mercia Police on 101.

Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Police issued the following advice on how to prevent dog thefts:

*Ensure that your dog wears a collar and identification (ID tag) when in a public place. On the tag, include your surname, address, telephone number and full postcode. If your dog is microchipped, and you have room to write that on the tag, then try and do so.

*Do not leave your dog unattended in the car or tied up outside a shop.

*Microchip your dog so that if the ID tag is removed, it is still permanently identifiable.

*Ensure that your dog does not go out of sight on walks. You should vary your walk times and routes and be wary of strangers who may be showing a lot of interest in your dog.

*You should be cautious when you invite people into your home to view dogs or puppies for sale. Restrict the number of visitors and their access. Always have someone with you.

*Make sure that your dog is neutered as this will reduce the chances of theft for breeding.

*Make sure that your fencing is adequate and check it regularly for wear and tear. Keep your dog in view when it goes out into the garden.
