MINDLESS vandals have attacked a clubhouse run by volunteers in Wolverley for the second time in a month.

Wyre Forest Phoenix FC girls team turned up for their football match on their home turf on Saturday (June 20) at Wolverley playing fields, in Mill Lane, and arrived to a sad scene as every one of the windows of the clubhouse where they get changed on site had been smashed overnight.

However, this is not the first time, as they had only just been repaired after the back windows had been reported broken, again by vandals, on June 8.

Chairman of Wolverley playing fields management committee Lyndon Darkes said if the incidents kept happening eventually it would not be possible for the windows to be fixed anymore.

He said: "We are looking into options at the moment because we can’t keep replacing them and having them smashed. We are looking at unbreakable glass and/or lockable shutters. I can only guess at this stage but I would say at least £1,000 for basic repairs.

"Wyre Forest Phoenix FC organised an emergency clear up work party on Sunday and have made the building as safe as possible and boarded up the windows. There is still broken glass in the frames so it's not ideal with children using it. We are worried that replacing the glass before having shutters will tempt further vandals."

Wyre Forest Phoenix FC has both ladies and children's teams which train and play at the ground using the clubhouse for changing, the toilet and kitchen facilities in the week and on the weekend during the football season. Other community groups in the area also use the clubhouse and playing fields, including Wolverley Primary School and The Queen's Head Football Club.

"The community is absolutely outraged and already we have had many kind offers of support," Mr Darkes added.

Carolyn Harper, welfare officer at Wyre Forest Phoenix FC, said the clubhouse had been made safe as it could be after the incident.

"The facility is run totally by volunteers, making the finances tight, and incidences like this just spoil things for so many members of the community," she said.

"We would like to appeal for any witnesses to contact the police who have been requested to investigate.

"We would also like to appeal for any local companies who may be able to help in any way to contact us, especially any local glazing companies who may be able to donate material, etc, for the repairs. Ideally this would include UPVC frames with either safety glass or suitable substitute."
