IT’S a good job there’s a lighthouse in Wolverley…

With attractions including Easter Island, A Bridge Not Far, and the Pharaoh’s Head, Mini-Pro Golf Parks, on Wolverley Road, is a star turn in the village during summer months.

Yet staff at the 18-hole course returned to their chip and put course on Friday morning (June 17) to discover it has been swallowed up by three feet of floodwater after the banks of River Stour broke.

Owner Matt Green, 51, said: "Our course is a mini pitch and put rather than crazy golf but it was certainly looking fairly crazy this morning when we came in at eight o’clock.

"It looks like a fish has been down on the 18th hole as the whole course is underwater.

"The bridge is floating away and I have lost the Pharaoh's Head – he’s on his last journey to the river Nile on a journey to the afterlife!

"The camel is on the ground too but his oasis is flooded!

"The ducks are loving it. It almost reminds me of being by the coast."

As a result of the floodwater, the course may be closed for up to two weeks to allow for drainage.

Mr Green added: "It is such a shame because we are by the river which makes it so lovely.

"At the same time we always have this niggling fear in the back of our minds that a nice river can turn into something that is a natural disaster.

"We got flooded when we first started three or four years ago in the winter but not like this – the whole golf course is under two to three foot of water.

"We are hoping it might drain up quickly as it is a natural course with grass rather than concrete.

"We will have to look at it when the flood water goes. It might take a week or it may be the week after that but we’re hoping for no more rain.

"We are always open in the middle of the summer but that is not happening this weekend."

Caution is urged in Wolverley after floods caused road closures.

Blakeshall Lane, at the junction of the Wolverley Road, and the Caunsall Road, at the junction of Kinver Lane and the A449, are both closed due to flooding.
