COMMUNITY spirit has helped revive a neglected building in Horsefair, with volunteers hoping regeneration in the area will attract funds to restore further sites.

The Old Post Office in Kidderminster’s Horsefair has received a makeover thanks to a hard-working group of local volunteers and support from the Big Local DY10.

Volunteers from ‘Horsefair and Proud’ have provided the building with a fresh lick of paint, new signage, and boards which showcase photos of Horsefair through the ages.

It is hoped the makeover – and photos sourced by the community group – will help maintain a sense of pride in the area, while also attracting more funds and volunteers.

Dawn Anglin, Chair of Horsefair and Proud and one of the volunteers who helped paint The Old Post Office, said: "I am so happy that Horsefair and Proud are making a difference.

"To see people stop and look at the old photos and reminisce really makes it all worthwhile."

Support and funding has been provided by Big Local DY10, who have £1m of Big Lottery funds to invest in the area over a 10-year period.

Joanne Knight, Big Local DY10 Partner, said: "It’s such a rewarding and proud feeling to have been part of this.

"Big Local is resident-led, we believe that communities know best and the Big Local is all about giving local people the opportunity to follow through on their ideas with the funds and support they need."

Community activist Spike Betterton has been instrumental in drumming up interest in the area, with the ‘Horsefair and Proud’ Facebook group gaining over 400 members since May.

Volunteers previously repainted the area next to the horse statue in conjunction with Specsavers, while they have also organised community litter picks and skip days.
