WYRE Forest residents will get a ‘frank’ look at the nature of emergency calls through a 24 hour police ‘Tweetathon’, a police chief says.

West Mercia Police will tweet every 999 and 101 call they receive from 7am on Friday (October 28), through the Twitter page @WMerciaPolice1.

The ‘Tweetathon’ is intended to offer an insight into policing demands and kick starts the 10-day-long Protect 2016 campaign, organised by West Mercia and Warwickshire police services.

Chris Singer, West Mercia Police deputy chief constable, said: “We are carrying out the 24-hour ‘Tweetathon’ to give the public a frank and honest look at the nature of the calls we receive.

“We hope to demonstrate that, whilst arresting people and putting them behind bars is one of our duties, it is only a small part of our role.”

Warwickshire police will be tweeting from the @warkspolice1 and eight back-up accounts have been set up in case Twitter freezes their accounts.

Anyone wishing to see all of the tweets can follow #OpProtect on Twitter.

A police spokesman added: “We will be shedding a light on the day-to-day trials, tribulations, successes and challenges of a police workforce.

“A workforce that serves villages, towns and cities across a combined total of 5,840 square miles and a community of more than 1.7m people.”

The police will also hold a range of events across the 10 days, showing how they keep communities safe.

These will include rural crime prevention events, community surgeries, live Facebook Q&A sessions, firework safety school visits, child sexual exploitation school talks and highly visible patrols.

The police will also highlight arrest warrants, license plate checks operations, licensing checks and hold bicycle safety events.

A webchat will be hosted on Wednesday, November 2 with chief officers from both services answering queries live on their websites.

The questions will be answered by chief constable Anthony Bangham; and deputy chief constables Chris Singer and Karen Manners.

Questions can be submitted for the live webchat prior to November 2, by emailing webchat@warwickshireandwestmercia.pnn.police.uk.
