THOUSANDS of Bewdley residents got in the festive spirt when they turned out in force for the annual Christmas lights switch-on event.

Bewdley Town Council took over the organising of the event for the first time this year and adopted a Victorian theme with entertainment, specialist stalls and activities taking place throughout the day.

The lights were turned on by Bewdley Mayor John Beeson and Father Christmas, with help from the town carnival princesses.

The changes drew a mixed response from visitors with some taking to social media to complain about the delay in lights being put on the tree and the lack of things for children to do.

But others praised the new event for the positive atmosphere it created in the town and the quality of the entertainment and the stalls.

Bewdley Town Council said it had received lots of positive feedback from many people and businesses in the town but added all feedback would be taken on board and considered.

On his Facebook page, Bewdley Mayor John Beeson said: “Great honour to turn on the Christmas lights in Bewdley, many thanks for everyone who turned out for the event.

“It was nice to see the Town’s businesses busier than previous years due to the changed layout. Also nice to see people enjoying the entertainment after the switch on as opposed to rushing home afterward like previous years.

“Unfortunately the Xmas lights company hugely let us down with the tree lights which is unacceptable but they are up now.

“As with any new event there were a few teething problems but it's a building block for next time!

“Well done to all the shops also for decorating their windows and Mat Jackson and staff at the Park Royal collection who won best display.”

Nick Farress, Bewdley Town Council clerk, added: “We must have had at least 5,000 turn out and it was great to see people enjoying themselves.

“We had some superb acts performing on the stage and businesses have given us very positive feedback.

“If people want to give us their feedback and have suggestions for what they would like to see changed for next year, we welcome them to get in touch with us so we can consider them.”
