A POIGNANT initiative aimed at spreading some Christmas cheer to lonely people in Kidderminster has been extended for another week.
The Special Christmas Cards scheme – which encourages people and children to post festive greetings that can be delivered to elderly residents who live alone, in residential homes and charities – was due to end this Sunday (December 11), but has now been extended to Sunday, December 18.
Kind-hearted organiser, Marissa Robinson, hopes to collect more than 1,000 Christmas cards to beat the success of last year’s initiative.
Special post boxes are located at the Kidderminster branches of Sainsburys and Tesco until December 18 - while the boxes at Dan-Jays Salon, in Worcester Street, and the Gatsby Emporium, in Oxford Street, will be collected on December 11.
Marissa launched the initiative in 2015 as she wanted her child to send Christmas cards to an elderly care home for residents who might not even get a visit.
She said: “It was just one of those crazy ideas. I just thought some elderly people don’t get visitors or cards at Christmas.
“It’s all about spreading a bit of Christmas cheer.”
Residents can find out more about the initiative at facebook.com/SpecialChristmasCards or by emailing sendacard15@hotmail.com.
