A FURIOUS Kidderminster councillor has branded the Government’s decision to scrap an agreement to allow 3,000 asylum seeker children already in camps in Europe to come to the UK as “shameful”.

Earlier this month Home Secretary Amber Rudd announced an end to the Dubs Amendment due to fears that it was encouraging young people to make dangerous trips and only benefitting human traffickers.

But Fran Oborski MBE, who was a leading member of the County campaign to bring Syrian Refugee families to Worcestershire, said she was appalled by the decision,

She also accused the Government of sneaking out the decision on the day Article 50 was being voted on in the House of Commons.

Councillor Oborski, who is the Liberal Democrat spokeswoman on Children, Young People and Families on Worcestershire County Council, said: “As Liberal Democrats we call on the Government to heed the advice from the Archbishop of Canterbury and rethink this decision.

“On January 29, we stood at Kidderminster's Holocaust Memorial Stone and heard resident Loree Napier tell us of her journey to the UK as a young Jewish girl fleeing Nazi Germany on the Kindertransport.

“It is absolutely shameful that our Government has now chosen to break faith with everyone who campaigned so hard for us to offer safety and sanctuary to these children.

“It is shameful that the UK, with a history of offering sanctuary to those in need, is now going back on the Dubs commitment.

“We understand that this decision is going to be challenged in the Supreme Court in May but we would urge the Government to reconsider this cruel decision before then."
