PUPILS from a Kidderminster school who took part in a 'Junior Cadet' scheme completed their course and received their certificates in a traditional 'passing out' parade.

The scheme was launched at St Mary's Primary School, in Stoney Lane, in January and it was hoped it would build better relationships with older primary school children and to more closely engage with them.

The pupils were presented with their certificates at a special assembly on Friday, February 17, in front of their proud parents, teachers and police officers.

Leading with an engaging and bespoke lesson plan agreed with the school, officers from Broadwaters Safer Neighbourhood Team have delivered sessions on topics including communication, road safety, forensics and anti-social behaviour. The basics of a police constable's role, radio use and the security of their own and other children's personal property were among other areas covered.

PCSO Sarah Francis said: "The whole Broadwaters Safer Neighbourhood Team have been involved in delivering the lessons to our Young Police Cadets, and have really enjoyed doing so.

"It has been a pleasure to watch the children grow in confidence over the last six weeks.

"When it came to designing the lesson plan in detail, it was important to have plenty for the children to get involved with in order to keep the lessons fun and exciting.

"At the same time it was equally important they learn about the different aspects of the policing role. We highlighted communication skills and security, looking at crime prevention and cyber crime.

"The children loved dressing up as scene of the crime officers and taking each others fingerprints.

"All the cadets are so proud of their achievement and get to leave with their certificates, cadet uniform and pocket-note books, as well as any relevant kit they have been given during the lessons."

Inspector Gareth Lougher added: "It is great to see the benefit and value of this scheme, and the level of enthusiasm the children have shown.

"All our officers, the parents and the teachers respond so positively, and it is very encouraging to see how much the children gain from the lessons.

"It is community policing at its best and I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing these Young Police Cadets pass out in true policing fashion."
