A MAN has appeared in court following knife drama which saw armed anti-terrorist police and bomb disposal officers swoop on Kidderminster streets.

Daniel Bebb-Jones, 23, of Merton Close, appeared at Redditch Magistrates Court today (June 21) charged with three counts of possessing a bladed article in public.

Bebb-Jones entered no plea at the hearing and spoke only to confirm his name and address.

He will appear at Worcester Crown Court at a later date and has been remanded in custody until July 24.

Bebb-Jones was arrested by armed police from the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit and West Mercia Police on Sunday (June 18) near to the Territorial Army Centre, in Birmingham Road.

As part of their investigation, homes were evacuated in Merton Close and a 100 metre cordon was put in place, as police officers, a bomb disposal team and counter terrorism officers searched his home.

While the search was on-going, trains were also cancelled between Kidderminster and Stourbridge Junction.

The activity left residents in the quiet cul-de-sac shocked and they also confirmed Bebb-Jones was the son of Marcus Bebb-Jones, a professional poker player, who was jailed in America in 2013 after admitting killing his wife Sabrina in 1997.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "Police were here from Sunday night and it was all quite dramatic.

"It was quite a shock when we were evacuated.”

Merton Close resident, Jay Marcarelli, added: "There was a 100 metre radius where people had to be evacuated until the bomb disposal squad came to check the house."

West Midlands Police linked the evacuation with Bebb-Jones’ arrest on Sunday night, but have since confirmed that the case is “not linked to terrorism”.
