WYRE Forest District Council will permanently fly the Union Flag - commonly known as the Union Jack - from the Town Hall in Kidderminster, the Civic Centre in Stourport and the Guild Hall in Bewdley from early next month.

The move comes following a national growing call to promote civic pride and to permanently fly the Union Flag. Previously, it has only been flown on special national days, such as the Monarch’s birthday.

Conservative councillor, John Campion, Leader of Wyre Forest District Council said: “The flag commonly known as the Union Jack is a unifying symbol in our modern multicultural society.

“I am very proud of our country and the values it represents and by flying the flag from our civic buildings it is another small way we can celebrate that pride.”

He added “This isn’t about excluding any part the diverse communities that exist within the district, it is more about celebrating what is good within society.

“I hope that businesses within the district will also follow suit and fly the national flag from their premises.”

How about a deduction from business rates / council tax for businesses and residents that do fly a flag?

I am so please to see some common sense & pride being shown at last, where its finally been recognised that it is ok for us to fly the Union Jack or the St George's Cross without being made to feel guilty of showing a bit of pride in our country & in our unity with our neighbours, the Scots the Welsh & Northern Island.

What we don't want to see is the Euro Flag, which means nothing & where most people if asked have no pride or sense of allegiance too, as there is nothing to be proud of being part of a Europe that dictates to us, takes our money & then closes our post offices.

The Union Flag is not a symbol of out " multicultural " society, it is the flag denoting the union of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Why is a councillor with such a dim view in charge of our council. This is the most pathetic comment I have seen from any councillor in the Wyre Forest
