Setting his sights on appeal target

THE new Mayor of Kidderminster has made the Millbrook Suite Appeal one of his charities.

Howard Martin, leader of Independent Community and Health Concern, will give two-thirds of his mayoral fund to the appeal, which aims to raise £150,000 for new equipment and refurbishment at Kidderminster Hospital’s cancer unit.

He explained: “It’s almost predictable that, as a Health Concern councillor, I would choose the Millbrook Suite.

“It would be great if we could help reach the target for the appeal by the end of the year.”

The other third of the fund will go to the Child Contact Centre at Trinity Methodist Church in Kidderminster, which provides a place for parents and their children to meet up if they do not live together.

“It gives them a nice environment without having to go and sit in a restaurant or walk around town in the cold,” Mr Martin said.

Mr Martin said he intended to do his job “for the people” over the next year, with plans to introduce a new citizens award scheme, where volunteers and community workers would be honoured.

“I want to give a couple of awards to people who have acted above and beyond the call of duty, to recognise the good work that an ordinary person in Kidderminster has done, “he said.

“I want to promote the young people of the town because I think there’s too much talk about ASBOs when there are tremendously talented young people here.”

Mr Martin currently serves as a Wyre Forest district councillor for Broadwaters.

Born in Kent, he moved to Kidderminster in 1974, having lived in Hagley for 10 years before that.

He said he felt “humbled” to be made the town’s Mayor, adding: “When you look at the list of names that have gone before, it’s a great honour.”
