A STOURPORT woman organised an event which raised more than £3,000 for children in poor Chinese villages.

Wailo Li gathered a group of youngsters who sold flags and stickers at locations across Birmingham on Sunday, collecting money which was donated to Oxfam Hong Kong.

The cash will go towards providing educational resources and teacher training for rural villages in Yunnan, China.

A total of £3,015 was raised, which will pay for 180 teachers to be trained, benefitting 9,181 students in China.

Miss Li said: “The fundraiser has been an enormous success- we have even exceeded our £2000 target. We are extremely pleased to have an opportunity to make a difference to the lives of children less fortunate than ourselves.

“We hope to keep up this kind of charity work every quarter so that it’s easier and more fun for young people to get involved in.

“All the praise goes to all the hard-working volunteers, putting in hard-work, time and effort for this worthwhile cause.”

The collections were made at Chinese supermarkets, Birmingham New Street Station and Birmingham Chinese Evangelical Church.

Miss Li is a founder of Project TOM, a social group consisting mainly of young Chinese people, which aims to get more Chinese UK residents involved in charity work.

The event was Project TOM’s third fund-raiser, with £13,550 given to charities so far.

Miss Li added: “TOM is based on the simple concept that doing good deeds and helping those less fortunate will help provide good role models for our future and that the world will become a better place as a result.”
