A DOUBLE mattress fell off the back of a truck into the path of a car in Kidderminster, forcing the car driver to pull up sharply to avoid it.

Police want the driver of the car, a Volvo saloon, to get in touch with them as well as anyone else who saw what happened.

The incident happened at around 4.30pm yesterday, by the Water Mill pub in the Worcester-bound lane of the A451 Stourport Road.

The mattress came off the back of a Ford Transit tipper truck, which was also carrying fence panels, and landed in the path of the Volvo, driven by a woman.

She managed to brake in time to avoid a collision and was seen removing the mattress from the highway.

The truck, which had a sky blue cab and black drop-sides, did not stop and was last seen heading towards the Worcester exit on the Worcester Road island.

PC Lee Halford, who is investigating, said it appeared the mattress had not been properly secured.

He added: “Fortunately, no-one was hurt but this could have resulted in a serious collision and injuries, particularly if there had been a motorbike or bicycle following the truck.

“We have already received some information about the incident but we really need to talk to other people who saw what happened – particularly the woman driver involved who, so far, has not come forward to report the matter.

“If anyone knows her identity, saw what happened or noticed the truck before or afterwards, then I would urge them to get in touch.”
