Wyre Forest women invited to ovarian cancer event

A ROADSHOW with a difference for women with ovarian cancer is hitting the Midlands on Thursday, December 10 for the first time.

An open invitation to attend the free event is being extended by the charity, Target Ovarian Cancer, to women in the Midlands, including Wyre Forest, who have had experience of ovarian cancer.

Designed as a “feel-good” and support day, the event takes place at the University of Birmingham Conference Park, from 10am to 4pm.

The programme includes:

Introduction to Aromatherapy, with Louise Heath

Getting the most out of local services session, with Midlands nurses

Look Good…Feel Better beauty tips with make-overs

Making the Most of Me Time workshop, with therapist, Philippa Carr

Sex and cancer discussion with clinical psychologist, Dr Darja Brandenburg

After coming through cancer and surgery and chemotherapy there is a sense of relief, if it signals survival but the cancer journey takes a huge toll on women, who are often left feeling shell-shocked and with their confidence in shreds.

Nurturing and mental adjustment are vital after any terrible ordeal and that is why Target Ovarian Cancer has devised its new-style roadshow to help women who are ovarian cancer survivors.

“Our roadshows can really boost the morale of someone who has recently finished treatment and give her a chance to mix with longer term survivors,” said one of the organisers, Philippa Carr, head of education at Target Ovarian Cancer.

“The roadshows are a way to bring women together to share experiences, anecdotes and tips for getting the most out of life.

"Target Ovarian Cancer is pioneering this new approach to supporting women living with and beyond ovarian cancer, that builds their confidence and celebrates their survivorship.

“While it is important to acknowledge the massive and often shocking impact a diagnosis of ovarian cancer can have on a woman's life, by coming together with other women in a non-medical and positive environment, we offer a unique opportunity that provides a much-needed boost."

To register for the event, call 020 7923 5470 or email kmail@targetovarian.org.uk.

For further information, people can visit the Target Ovarian Cancer website, targetovarian.org.uk.

For other women hearing about ovarian cancer, who might be worried they have symptoms, the Department of Health-agreed main symptoms are persistent pelvic or abdominal pain, persistent swollen tummy or abdomen, persistent difficulty eating or feeling full quickly.
