TESCO has been given the go-ahead to build a new supermarket, car park and petrol station in Stourport.

The plans for the northern part of the former Carpets of Worth site, in Severn Road, were approved at a meeting of Wyre Forest District Council planning committee, last night.

The company had previously gained outline approval and submitted a reserved matters application to consider the layout, scale, appearance and landscaping of the proposal.

The Midcounties Co-Operative has been given permission to pursue a judicial review of the outline consent but as yet no date has been set for the High Court hearing.

Leader of the council, Conservative, John Campion, speaking after the meeting, said: “There was general contentment from the committee that the principle of a store going on this site had already been previously agreed. All outstanding matters were resolved, subject to any legal challenge as per the judicial review brought by Mid Counties Co-Op.”

He added: “The former Carpets of Worth site’s redevelopment is vital to the long-term viability of Stourport. A town of this size needs a healthy competition in its supermarket provision. The application, in my view, will see much-needed competition into the town and offer consumers a choice. I look forward to the application being implemented.”

An application for a mixed-use development on the southern part of the same site was also approved.

Arab Investments Ltd was granted outline permission for 159 homes and employment facilities, including retail, a hotel and assembly and leisure facilities.

During the planning committee meeting, Liberal councillor, Fran Oborski, called the layout a “boy racer’s delight” and asked: “Has any consideration been given to what that layout will mean in terms of ability to abuse it in the evenings?”

It was clarified that the application was for outline permission only and that traffic issues would have to be addressed.
