STAFF at a Wyre Forest organisation set up to help people facing mental barriers into work are celebrating after being recognised in a national competition.
Community Support Initiatives (CSI), based in Kidderminster, was one of 24 organisations, out of 200 entries, to be shortlisted for the final vote in the Lemos and Crane Acorn Awards, narrowly missing out on a top three finish.
The awards highlight projects which generate positive outcomes such as health and wellbeing, new skills and knowledge, new friendships and a sense of purpose and wellbeing.
The Wyre Forest organisation was recognised for its work in using nature to improve and enhance the lives of vulnerable and socially excluded people with its entry “using nature to build cohesive families”.
John Ledson, project officer, said: “It’s fabulous to get this level of recognition for our work, especially when you realise we were only launched last January and officially started delivering services in April, 2011.”
The project aimed to teach people how to have fun with traditional exploration of nature, whether at a garden, a pond or woodland.
Anne Breese, CSI manager, said: “We were really pleased about getting shortlisted, being such a small organisation. The feedback we had from people on the project was really positive.
“We hope next year, with more support, we can make it into the winner’s enclosure.”
