A BEAVER Scouts group from Spennells have presented two African elephants at West Midland Safari Park with an early birthday cake to celebrate this weekend’s elephant appreciation event.

The seven and eight-year-olds decorated the cake before having the opportunity to present it to elephant Five.

The cake, weighing 35kg, was made with pony pellets which were soaked and mixed with vegetables and fashioned into a cake shape by the park’s elephant keepers.

Strawberries, grapes, berries and other healthy snacks were used to decorate the cake by the Beavers.

The special event was in honour of the elephant appreciation weekend taking place today and tomorrow.

Set up in 2011 by the Elephant Focus Group, elephant appreciation is being promoted by West Midland Safari Park to raise awareness of elephants and raise money for the Namibian Wildlife Conservation Trust which helps fund research into wildlife conservation in Namibia.

A fundraising raffle will also take place during the weekend with chances to win paintings, created by African elephant Five.
