ANIMAL-loving youngsters have welcomed a new classmate - a hamster called Biscuit.

Year five Holy Trinity International School pupils have been looking after their little furry friend since the start of the term and even have a rota to arrange who takes him home at weekends and away on holidays.

Harriet Murphy, 10, who monitors the pet, said: “I change Biscuit’s food and water every day and he absolutely loves celery - it’s his favourite thing as he hides in it in his tube to eat later.

“We also clean out his cage and put out fresh bedding and straw every other day.”

Jo Powell, creative arts teacher, added: “The children simply love checking up on Biscuit. We’ve had him for a couple of years now and each year he helps the new students settle into year 5.

“Having a pet gives them a real sense of responsibility because they have to look after him completely, with no help from me.”

She said looking after the hamster helped the youngsters overcome “fears” and “anxieties” about starting a new school term.
