WORK to replace ageing gas pipes in Bewdley will begin on Monday (January 5) closing off a residential street for the rest of the month.

To help gas network operator National Grid carry out the work on Sandy Bank, the road will be closed to through traffic for the duration of the three-week project.

During that time, motorists will be diverted onto Winbrook and Merricks Lane, but access to properties on Sandy Bank, as well as Forest Close, will still be available.

The company claim the new main will make the gas network in the town “safer and reliable” for both residents and businesses.

Steve Murray, of National Grid, said: “We know that some of the work we have to carry out to replace the gas mains can create disruption and inconvenience but we are always looking for ways to minimise these problems.

“However, I’d like to assure motorists this work is essential and will help to make sure residents in Bewdley continue to enjoy a safe and reliable gas supply.”

Made of hard-wearing plastic, the new pipes are expected to last for several generations and will need little or no maintenance, meaning a reduction in future disruption from road works.
