A STOURPORT IT support provider has recently offered a past work experience student a permanent position after the “excellent” impression he made with the firm.

Lewis Liggins, 22, who joined Worcester Road based OGL Computer in 2013 for a week’s work experience, will return to the firm in a permanent capacity.

After his successful stint with the company, during which time he shadowed a range of IT professionals and visited customer sites to help with installations and equipment updates, he returned to education to complete his higher national diploma (HND) in computing.

Joanne Day, OGL recruitment specialist, said: “We’re actively looking for young people with a flair and passion for IT to join our company and build their career with us.

“Lewis came to us from Worcester College of Technology a couple of years ago on work experience and it was clear he was very talented and just the type of person we want working for us.

“We kept in touch with Lewis during his final year at college to see how he was getting on and what his plans were after finishing his HND.

“On completion of his course, we offered Lewis a technical trainee position and were delighted that he accepted.”

As a technical trainee, Lewis will experience many different aspects of IT and will learn from staff who have been working at OGL since well before he was born.

Lewis said: “Work experience with OGL was fantastic and it honestly opened my eyes to what working in IT is really like.

“What I was taught at college gave a really good theoretical understanding, but actually dealing with real customers and IT infrastructures is completely different and was so useful to my studies.

“Then to come out of it all with a good relationship with a great local employer who then offered me a job was brilliant.”

The firm is looking to replicate Lewis’ story when its HR Team head to the Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre today (January 14) where Lewis will give a presentation to IT students about OGL and the scheme.

Joanne added: “It’s not easy for young people to find the type of employment they are looking for when they leave education, but we hope to contribute to easing that problem for some local IT-minded youngsters each year by offering our work placements which can lead to a job offer and bright career opportunities,”
