Concern over the decline of High Street shops and town centres will be the subject of the National WI Resolution for the AGM.

This was debated by members, with Jacki Clark, vice president, proposing, and Cherry Greaves, president, opposing.

A lively discussion followed, with many thought-provoking opinions being expressed. The resolution was passed by a majority vote. The update of the WI Constitution and Rules was outlined and passed unanimously by members as was the election of the Federation Trustees. Cherry thanked members for making the April group meeting such a success and for providing superb refreshments and lovely flower arrangements.

She also announced the summer event to raise funds for the Denman College Bursary would take the form of a Coronation Garden Party. Laurie Parfit has offered her garden for the party. The cost will be £6.

Also, during the summer, Lesley Smith is planning a walk with a quiz around Bewdley.

Reports were given on several events which members had attended. Cherry Greaves reported on the Village Hall AGM and gave an informative account of the Resolution and Campaign Day while Lesley Smith spoke on the spring council meeting and lunch. Patsy Anderson reported on the skittles matches and declared Pam Sheward the winner of the Janet Hjelter Trophy.

The participants of the ‘I made it, I wear it’ competition modelled their garments which the audience judged. The winner was Laurie Parfitt (waistcoat) with Jacki Clark (evening dress) second, and Bernie Downing (cardigan) third. An exhibition of the work of the art group was displayed and admired.

The next meeting, on June 10, will be an open meeting for husbands, and friends. Wendy Hill will be the speaker on ‘Elgar’s Life and some of his Music’. The meeting at Areley Kings Village Hall starts at 7.30pm.
