Derek Walker attended an assembly service at Astley CE Primary School to present trophies to the lucky winners who had entered the Spring Show.

He awarded cups and rosettes to the children in Willow, Elm and Oak classes who had achieved first, second or third for heir decorated eggs and spring flower pictures. He also gave every child in the school a chocolate bar for their efforts.

Guest speaker David Tideswell presented ‘Our Friendly Robin’ at the April meeting.

He is a well-known ornithology expert and writer from Staffordshire. Having given up his career as an electrical engineer he writes and gives talks about winged creatures.

He was keen to tell the audience how to make gardens a major attraction for his feathered friends. Members gained an insight into the life of the robin with his amusing and fascinating talk and slides. He has recently written a guide book encouraging people how to look after these precious birds and has become known as ‘The Robin Man’.

He explained about behavioural traits including wagging and flicking their tails, catching insects, nest building, mating techniques, hatching plans and parenting habits. Members were reminded about predators and especially the domestic cat which is a real danger to birds feeding on the ground in the garden.

The club will be making a visit to The Bannut Tree Gardens, Bromyard on Wednesday, June 12 and will also have a coach trip on June 30 to Dorothy Clive Garden and Hodnet Hall Gardens.
