Doreen Jeeves talked about the work of the ‘Associated Country Women of the World’ (known within WI as ACWW) at the latest meeting.

She described the way in which it works at grassroot level, funding development projects requested directly by local communities.

Their aim is to help small groups of women interested in developing their own communities, who are not able to access funds from major donors.

Some of the projects have included the provision of clean water, training in farming techniques, the improvement of hygiene and food production and most recently the training of birth assistants.

The organisation is linked to the United Nations and helps to give women in the Third World a voice. It is acknowledged that women are often an untapped resource capable, with support, of making a significant difference to the quality of life for their families.

Doreen emphasised the importance of involving the whole community in the projects as often the approval of the elders of village was required.

Blakedown WI has in the past supported projects undertaken by ACWW and following Doreen's talk many of the group’s newer members have no doubt gained a clearer understanding of the importance of this work.

June Gordon had news of two proposed trips – afternoon tea and a tour of the Chateau Impney and in August a coach trip to Weston.

Congratulations to Jan Cook, who has once more had a photograph accepted for the WI calendar with its theme of ‘Water in Worcestershire’.

Members were reminded that the annual baking competition takes place in May and the task this year is to produce an apple pie.

The evening concluded with an hilarious version of the tv show Play your cards right compiled by Jan Cook. There was a great deal of laughter and some utterly ridiculous answers. Many thanks to Jan and her team who arrange the social time events – they never disappoint.

Blakedown WI is now in its 94 year but the spirit is still young. There are 50 loyal members but the WI is always eager to attract new members. The group meets on the second Wednesday of the month in the Blakedown Parish Rooms at 7.30pm. All will be made made very welcome.
