CLEOBURY Mortimer's MP has welcomed news that Shropshire will receive an additional £1.7 million to fix roads in the county, following the damage from this winter’s wet weather.

The money is Shropshire’s share, announced earlier this year, after the Government announced it was making a further £183.5 million available to local highway authorities in England to help repair recent damage to the local road network.

Conservative Philip Dunne said: “The wet winter weather and frequently varying temperatures over the winter months have taken their toll on road surfaces in Shropshire, so I am pleased the Government has made this money available to make necessary repairs.

"Over the course of this Parliament the Government will spend £4.5 billion on local roads maintenance, some £800 million more than the previous Government, showing the commitment to tackling this issue.

"I am also encouraging Shropshire Council to bid for further funding from the additional £200 million set aside to protect and repair local roads, announced in the Chancellor’s Budget speech."
