STOURBRIDGE’S branch of a supermarket giant has recently been living up to its motto by lending a little helping hand to two community organisations.

Staff from the town’s Tesco store made donations to support the summer fetes of Clent Primary School and an elderly residential estate in Pedmore.

The store donated £100 worth of food and barbecue products to the primary school’s PTA-run event and cream teas to the residents on the estate.

Wayne Barker, store manager, said: “We donated all of the school’s burgers, sausages and bread rolls and although it was a wet day they were still able to raise £2,500.

“It is a small school in a small village with only 160 pupils. They don’t have a lot of parental support like some of the schools with thousands of students, so they find fundraising more difficult.

“The residential estate has about 20 bungalows and they were holding their summer fete and wanted to provide the residents with afternoon tea.

“The event also helps the residents get together socially, because unless they have an event like this, they don’t actually get much of a chance to see each other.”

Wayne said the store, which celebrates its second birthday in October, wants more groups and community organisations to approach the store for support.

He said: “We’re a relatively new store and we want to show the local area that we are not a ‘big retailer trying to kill off the high street’, we want to be part of a community where we can all work together and help each other.

“We have a number of groups we are working with, but we urge more people to come forward to seek our help. All they have to do is either come in to the store or write to us and we will get back to them to let them know what we can do.”
