SPORTY Wyre Forest residents will be lacing up their running shoes and taking their marks to run and raise cash for Sport Relief.

Several events will take place during the next week at schools and clubs throughout the district, including the Sport Relief Mile, which will start at Stourport Sports Club, Kingsway, on Sunday at 10.30am.

Other events will include a swimathon taking place on at the Wyre Forest Glades Leisure Centre, Bromsgrove Street, Kidderminster, on Saturday at 5pm - where swimmers can dive in individually, with a choice of distances between 1.5km and 5km or take part in a team event.

Pupils at King Charles I School, Comberton Road, Kidderminster, have been taking part in an entire week of sporting events and other fun challenges - such as a staff versus student Ready, Steady, Cook event to raise as much money as possible for the charity.

Sport Relief encourages people throughout the UK to get active and raise life-changing cash and officially takes place from tomorrow until Sunday but some groups hold sports days during the weeks before and after.

Hundreds of people are said to have signed up for the event at Stourport Sports Club, being hosted by Kidderminster and Stourport Athletics Club. The one-mile run will be held around the venue's all-weather running track, with three and six-mile events using the sports club's cycle track.

Athletics club spokesman Andrew Priest said: "This is the third time the Sport Relief Mile has come to Stourport Sports Club so let's don the headband and show the rest of the country what we can do."

Meanwhile, at King Charles I School, pupils and staff are taking part in several activites during this week, including their own Sport Relief Mile tomorrow, a hula hoop challenge, football match and gruelling dodgeball tournament.

Joyti Mandher, humanities teacher said: “Students and teachers at King Charles I School love taking part in Sport Relief. It’s an excellent way to bring staff, students and the community together to get active, have fun and raise money for a great cause.”
