MP for Clent, Belbroughton and Hagley Sajid Javid has been appointed as the new culture secretary.

The Conservative MP for Bromsgrove has taken over from embattled minister Maria Miller who has resigned as Secretary for Culture, Media and Sport after a row over her expenses refused to go away.

Mr Javid, who has been tipped as a future leader of the party, has been promoted from his role as Financial Secretary to the Treasury which he had held since October 2013.

Previously Economic Secretary to the Treasury, Mr Javid has been MP for Bromsgrove since the 2010 General Election.

Before moving into politics he worked in business and finance.

Educated at Exeter University where he studied economics and politics, he became a vice president at Chase Manhattan Bank at the age of 25.

He later moved to Deutsche Bank, London, to help build its business in emerging market countries. He then left the bank as a senior managing director in the summer of 2009 to give something back through politics.

Just a week and a half ago – the MP, who is married with four children, stopped off at Clent Club on March 28 to find out more about villagers’ plans to upgrade the club.

He said he was “really pleased” to visit the venue where he met stewardess Dawn Bubb and committee members and he added: “It is a fantastic facility at the heart of the local community, with a very friendly atmosphere. I wish them every success with the proposed refurbishment, which will benefit a large number of people of all ages.”

In his new role Mr Javid will be responsible for developing policies and strategies relating to the arts and culture, broadcasting, creative industries, media, libraries, museums and galleries, sport, tourism, telecommunications and gambling and racing.

Clent parish councillor Caroline Howard said: "I'm sure he will make an excellent culture minister. Sajid has always been keen to take part and lend his support to our local events in Clent, always showing great interest in the community. Let's hope he's not too busy to pop back and see us."
