HARVINGTON HALL will be opening its gardens to coincide with the village’s festival on Saturday and Sunday.

The grounds will be open between 11.30am and 4pm on both days as part of the National Gardens Scheme.

The garden walls date from the early days of the hall in the 16th century with one wall, stretching from the courtyard to the Georgian Chapel, being from the 18th century.

This was built in a time when Catholic worship was tolerated but had to be discrete and by having high walls, worshippers could walk to church without being seen.

The herb garden is set out as a knot with the initials of the three families who have owned the hall, Pakington, Yate and Throckmorton.

There will be guided tours of the hall on both days and on Sunday, visitors will be able to enjoy Elizabethan music and dancing.

The Harvington Festival begins tomorrow with a classical concert in the hall’s Great Chamber and on Saturday there will be jazz music performed in the garden.

An upcoming event at the hall is an outdoor performance of The Importance of Being Earnest on Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21.
