WYRE Forest children who have completed this year’s Summer Reading Challenge are being invited to a special award ceremony at their local library to receive their medals and certificates.

The challenge is part of a national campaign aimed at encouraging children to read and use libraries through the school holidays.

It gives children the aim to read at least six books, which can be in whatever form they like, such as fact books, joke books, picture books or audio books, during their time away from school – just as long as they are borrowed from the library.

Children who signed up to the challenge at Kidderminster Library will be presented with their medals and certificates by the leader of Wyre Forest District Council, Marcus Hart, on Saturday, September 27, at 11am and 2pm.

Presentations will also be taking place at Bewdley Library on Monday, September 29, and at Stourport Civic Hall, on Tuesday October 28.

Worcestershire County Councillor Lucy Hodgson, cabinet member for localism and communities, said: “We are so pleased with the response we have had to this year's Summer Reading Challenge.

“It is an excellent scheme that is well proven in terms of benefits to children who take part and complete the challenge.

“The award ceremonies are really important for acknowledging the hard work and commitment of the children.”

Libraries across the county are now encouraging young people to get involved in Chatterbooks Week, which runs from October 11 to 18.

Young people will be able to download free e-books and e-magazines, as well as take part in many other activities and events taking place across the libraries.
