A KIDDERMINSTER leisure centre manager is taking part in the national Go Sober campaign to help support Macmillan Cancer Support.

Luke Mitchell, operations manager at Wyre Forest Glades Leisure Centre, will stop drinking for the whole month of October in a bid to raise money for the cause.

He will be blogging about his experiences throughout the month on the Glades facebook page.

Mr Mitchell said: “I am taking part for multiple reasons – the main cause is to support Macmillan nurses in the fantastic job they do in supporting cancer sufferers.

“Most, if not all people have either suffered or had somebody close to them suffer from cancer, myself included.

“I am also taking part in this event for the good of my own general health.”

Organisers of Go Sober said that by taking part in the challenge and staying sober for 31 days it will not only raise money for the cause, but is also good for the fundraiser's health.

Keeping off alcohol brings benefits such as increased energy levels, higher productivity, a clearer head, better sleep, less snoring, weight loss and clearer skin.

Mr Mitchell added: “Cancer is an evil, malevolent illness which can be fought and new cures and treatments would not be so readily available if organisations such as Macmillan didn't exist.”
