A KIDDERMINSTER driving instructor is to form part of a unique fundraising event for this year’s Children in Need appeal.

David Jones will join hundreds of other instructors and pupils, from across the UK, to form the Big Learner Relay.

The relay will see each instructor giving an actual pupil a one hour driving lesson whilst carrying the Big Learner Relay top box on their vehicle.

Once the lesson has been completed the top box will be passed on to the next car for that instructor and pupil to continue the relay.

The 55-year-old said: “As this is my first participation in a major charity event I am very excited to be involved in this brilliant idea.

“I have also been given the honour of leading what I hope will be a procession of local instructor vehicles between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth.”

The event, which will cover more than 2,100 miles around England and Northern Ireland, started on October 30 and will finish in Birmingham on Children in Need night on November 14.

David and the rest of the Kidderminster procession will be leaving the town’s Asda car park at 5pm on Wednesday, November 12.

The initial fundraising target for the relay was £5,000, but donations by individuals and companies involved in the driver training industry means the figure has already been surpassed.

David said Louise Walsh, who originally came up with the idea and has been organising the event, will travel the entire relay route as a passenger in each of the lead cars.

“Louise came up with the idea whilst watching last year’s Children in Need and when she floated the idea I just had to be involved for such a wonderful worthy cause.”
