A FORMER Kidderminster Mayor, who passed away in 2012, has had a road named after him in his honour.

Carter’s Gardens at The Oaks development, off Sutton Park Road, has been named after Peter Carter, who was mayor of the town between 1996 and 1997.

Peter was born in Kidderminster in 1926 and had one son, John, with his wife Beryl.

John, who unveiled the name plaque along with his wife Pauline and other family members, said: “It was quite humbling to see my family name engraved on a sign which will stand in the ward my father represented for many years to come.

“I’m sure both he and my mother would be extremely proud.”

As well as being Mayor of Kidderminster, Peter also served as a Wyre Forest District Councillor for 16 years, and current council leader, Marcus Hart, was present for the unveiling.

Councillor Hart said: ““I worked alongside Peter for two years and always found him to be a true gentleman who was very well respected by the local Sutton Park community.

“To name this road after Peter is a fitting tribute to his years of dedicated public service.”

The new development, built by David Wilson Homes Mercia, has a range of traditionally styled five bedroom homes, priced from £495,000.

Steve Barton, senior sales manager for the developer, said: “Mr Carter played an extremely important role in the local community for a long time and we are pleased to be able to honour his memory in this way.

“We believe it’s important to consider the local area and its influences when building new homes and the choice of road names is just one way of doing this."
