On November 25, Dr Paul Norgate will talk to the society on Wilfred Owen - First World War Poet.

Dr Norgate will speak about the life and work of Wilfred Owen, who was killed in France just seven days before the signing of the Armistice in 1918.

Owen’s war poetry was written in an intense period during the last year of his life.

Over the century since then, Owen has become perhaps the best known - and for many, the best loved - of the English Poets of the First World War. Paul Norgate’s lecture will explore what we know about Wilfred Owen and his work, and what makes his poetry so powerful.

Paul grew up in Wolverhampton and now lives in Wolverley. He studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, Merton College, Oxford and the University of Birmingham, and is associate lecturer at Cambridge University Institute of Continuing Education.

After teaching for over 25 years in secondary and higher education, both in this country and abroad, he was latterly Chair of Examiners for Cambridge University Examinations Syndicate.

Paul has published articles on Owen and gives lectures and talks on Owen and other First World War topics to a wide range of audiences.

As part of the centenary commemoration of the First World War, in 2014 he presented a paper on Owen at a major national conference on ‘British Poetry of the First World War’ in Oxford.

The meeting following will be on December 2, when members of the society will make their own contributions on the subject of Kidderminster in Times Past.

Meetings of the society start at 7.30pm and are held in St George’s Annexe, adjacent to St George’s Church, Radford Avenue, Kidderminster.

There is a small charge for visitors who are very welcome.
