THE PHOENIX CLUB: At the meeting on February 16 members were treated to a talk given by Roger Tapping entitled "Restoration of the Droitwich Canal". This portion of the canal from just north of Droitwich to Hawford to link up with the River Severn had been derelict since 1939.

Roger explained the work to restore this stretch of the canal, started in 1973. It was mainly done by volunteers and enthusiasts. His excellent digital "before" and "after" images showed the enormous task of clearing vegetation, dredging, repairing 9 locks, banks and towpaths and building a new bridge under the A449. Finally reopened in summer 2011 it is now navigable for pleasure trips. The replanting of reed beds for wildlife and landscaping of the town centre marina make it truly a treasure on our doorstep.

On, March 15 the AGM will be followed by Peter Picken’s reminiscences of "Policing in the 1960/70’s".

Visitors are welcome at Trinity Methodist Church Centre, Kidderminster at 2pm. Further information from Katharine on 01299 877989 or Diana on 01562 753355.
